đ¨ Mahmoud Khalil Arrested: Trumpâs Crackdown on Pro-Palestine Students Begins

âThey took him in front of his pregnant wife. This is political persecutionânothing more.â
In a shocking escalation of Trumpâs crackdown on pro-Palestine activism, U.S. immigration authorities have arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian graduate student at Columbia University. Despite holding a legal green card, Khalil was detained at his university-owned apartment and has now been moved to a Louisiana detention center, hundreds of miles from his home.
His crime? Speaking out for Palestine.
đĽ Arrested in Front of His Pregnant Wife
On Saturday night, federal agents stormed Khalilâs building and arrested him in front of his wifeâwho is eight months pregnant. When she demanded answers, agents threatened to arrest her, too.
âThey silenced anyone supporting Palestine on campus, and that still wasnât enough,â Khalil said just hours before his arrest.
Officials initially claimed his student visa was revoked, but Khalil is a legal permanent resident. His lawyer says agents then falsely claimed his green card was also revoked.
â ď¸ Trumpâs War on Student Activists
Khalilâs detention is not an isolated caseâitâs part of a wider crackdown on pro-Palestine students:
đ¨ $400 million in federal funding was just cut from Columbia University over its handling of student protests.
đ¨ Federal agents tried to detain another international student at Columbia but were blocked at the door.
đ¨ Trump officials say this is âonly the beginning.â
âThis is a terrifying abuse of immigration law. Mahmoud was arrested for his speech, not for a crime,â said his attorney, Amy Greer.
â Targeted for Free Speech
Khalil was a leading figure in Columbiaâs pro-Palestine movement, helping organize protests and negotiate with administrators. He has not been accused of any crime.
Now, Khalilâs supporters are rallying in NYC, demanding an end to these political arrests.
âThey want to scare us into silence. We wonât back down.â â Columbia student Maryam Alwan
