NIH to Cut Grants for Universities That Boycott Israel or Support DEI

Research for cancer? Alzheimer’s? Doesn’t matter—if you back Palestine, you’re out. 😐
🧬 What’s going on?
The National Institutes of Health (NIH)—aka the biggest funder of medical research in the world—just issued a shocking new rule:
If a university supports:
- Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) programs that challenge discrimination, OR
- Boycotts of Israel (yes, specifically Israel, not any other country)...
They’ll lose their funding.
Immediately. No appeal. Even if they’re curing cancer. 💸
📉 Who’s affected?
This isn’t small change. NIH gives out $48 billion a year in grants to thousands of universities.
Harvard alone got $488 million in 2024. That’s now in jeopardy.
Columbia, Brown, Northwestern, and Cornell have also faced freezes.
And yes, the new policy applies to new, renewed, and even ongoing grants.
One researcher put it simply:
“A university can boycott Texas or China—but not Israel. That’s the line.”
🤯 Why this is wild
You can boycott any other country.
You can oppose any other government.
But the moment you say, “Israel is an apartheid state”?
📉 NIH pulls your funding.
“It’s absolutely amazing,” said journalist Glenn Greenwald,
“how the U.S. government writes new rules daily—just to protect one foreign country.”
And this is coming from a U.S. agency that funds lifesaving medical research.
🎓 What this really means
NIH is now tying scientific discovery to political loyalty.
If your school:
- Empowers marginalized students
- Advocates for Palestinian rights
- Supports a boycott of companies tied to occupation…
You can kiss that research funding goodbye.
“These have stark real-life consequences,” said Harvard President Alan Garber.
“For patients, students, researchers—and the standing of American higher education.”
✊ TL;DR
- NIH just banned grants to schools that boycott Israel or run DEI programs
- U.S. research is now hostage to politics—not progress
- Free speech and medical innovation are under attack
- And Palestinian solidarity is being punished… again
